First episode of the series dedicated to the history of Muslim Spain (al-Andalus)!

And of course, we start with the conquest of Spain by Berber-Arab forces; a conquest that took place between 711 and 715/716.

Small corrections (9 months later):

In this video, I should have made it clearer that this episode of Count Julien has a chance (or risk!) of being an invention of the sources, an a posteriori creation. Even if it is vague and that certain works contradict each other, historians are quite in agreement to say that it is more likely that the reasons are more "down to earth". With Musa ibn Nusayr's desire to attack Spain (or Hispania, for more historical rigor), or even, perhaps, that Tariq ibn Ziyad himself took the initiative to push the expedition of Tariff without having the full agreement of Mûsâ.

In short, it's not easy to untangle all that, but keep in mind that the beginning of the video and the "pretext" given to conquer the Iberian Peninsula is perhaps legendary or at least semi-legendary.

Edit: Regarding the sources mentioned at 4:50, I am of course talking about the Muslim/Arabic sources. There are Christian sources, such as the Mozarabic chronicles, which are older (8th century). But the precise dating of the events remains very complex.

The continuation of the video (EP. 2) =    • La conquête musulmane de l'Espagne : ...

In this episode, the goal is not to go into the details of this conquest, but mainly to focus on events. There is of course a multitude of interesting things to note (debates of historians around the conquest; problems of sources; more precise context etc…) and we will not talk about it in another video!
