The Launceston Steam Railway is a narrow gauge railway that runs for 2½ miles through the unspoilt countryside of the Kensey Valley in Cornwall. All trains are hauled by lovingly restored Victorian steam locomotives. Whilst on holiday in North Cornwall in July, my wife & I visited this unique railway.

The loco operating on the day of our visit was Covertcoat. It was built in 1898 for shunting at Port Dinorwic as well as for use at Dinorwic Quarry. Covertcoat spent most of its working life at Port Dinorwic until 1925 when it was sent up to the 'Californian' level in the quarry. It fell out of use in October 1959 and was later sold in 1964 to John Butler of Ripley in Surrey who preserved the locomotive; Covertcoat was later purchased by Launceston Steam Railway in 1984.
