Shall we say “I arrived in the airport.” or “I arrived at the airport”? These tiny words are confusing and many English learners often commit mistakes when using them. So, how should we avoid making these mistakes?

In today’s video, let’s talk about some common mistakes in prepositions that you should avoid making. I know for sure that when learning English as a second language, it’s quite hard to master prepositions because it has many different uses, that’s why they turn out to be tricky. So, let’s dive into them!

1. I will discuss ABOUT culture.
- The word “discuss” is often confused with “talk about” because they have the same meaning.
- That’s why many English learners combine discuss and talk about together, ending up using “discuss about”
- So, we don’t say “discuss about”, we only say “discuss” or “talk about”

2. I arrived IN the airport.
- We say “I arrived at the airport.”
- Because we use arrive AT for buildings and parts of buildings.
I arrived at the station just before the train left.
- But it’s possible to use arrive IN for towns, cities, and countries
I think he will arrive in London after an hour.
- So, that’s the difference between “arrive in” and “arrive at”

3. I am married WITH a teacher.
- We say “married to” + someone
I am married to John.
- It’s also possible to say “Married with” in formal English when you want to add information to your state of marriage. This is common when you are filling out forms.
Married with children (married and has children)
Married with dependents (married and has dependents)
- So, if you want to say that you are married to someone then use the preposition “to”

4. I look AT the mirror to see myself
- "In" and "at" are correct prepositions to use, but they can be tricky because carry out different meanings that you have to be careful of
- When you look at the mirror, you look at the object itself rather than using it
- When you look in the mirror, you look into the glass to see your reflection

5. It depends OF the situation
- The verb “depend” always goes with the preposition “on”
- We never say “depends of”
Are you going to the park this weekend? = it depends on the weather
When she was young, she would always depend on her mother financially.

6. I asked TO you a question.
- We say “I asked you a question.” = in this sentence, “ask” is followed by an object pronoun
- We don’t add the preposition “to” after the word ask UNLESS we are requesting something
I asked you to help me.
- We can also use the preposition “for” if we want someone to give us something
I always ask for extra ketchup for my fries.

7. You should fill UP the form
- When you “fill up” something, you make it become full
I filled the car up with fuel.
- BUT when you “fill out”, you complete a form or document”
If you want to join the gym, please fill out the form.

8. I agree TO you
- We agree with a person if we have the same opinion as them.
My teacher says reading is very important, and I agree with her.
- BUT we agree TO do an action - so agree to is followed by a verb - and this means you promise to do the action:
We all agreed to meet up at 8:00.

9. I travel go to work BY foot.
- “On foot” is an English phrase which means “to walk”, so if you go to a place on foot, you walk to get there
- We confuse “on” with “by” because most of the time we use “by” with mode of transportation like
I go to school by bus.
We went to the hospital by car.

10. I need to go TO home.
- Most of my students add the preposition “to” after the verb “go”, well it makes sense because you “go to a place”, right?
- But in the case of “go + home”, we don’t need to add “to”, because “home” is an adverb of place in this phrase. It functions like the words here, there, up, inside
- So we say “go home”
