In this video we'll be looking at a number of lines around Zürich served by the S14 commuter service.
If we were to go backwards at the start, we would be on a historical line that has been preserved by the DVZO association, which has its Depot in Bauma. This officially closed would have continued to the left of our track as signalled at the start. I hope one day to be able to document this railway.
We start on the Hinwil - Effretikon railway, which we deviate from at the first station, continuing on the Glatt valley railway to Wallisellen. From there we are on the original line between Winterthur and Zürich from 1855. Most InterCity trains now take the line we merge with in Oerlikon in order to travel via Zürich airport.
In Oerlikon the line splits into 3 different double tracked lines that lead to Zürich. We will be taking the newest and only line that allows an onward journey in a westerly direction beyond Zürich, without a change in direction. It was opened in 2014 and is known as the "Durchmesserlinie" (through line).
The other lines include the original line (middle tunnel) to Zürich via Wipkingen from 1856 and the Käferberg line (far right tunnel) that was opened in 1969 to give freight trains a direct connection to Altstetten and was completed with a connection to Zürich HB via Hardbrücke in 1982.

More to come.
