ICE FISHING WHITEFISH and LAKE TROUT ON FLATHEAD LAKE MONTANA in MARCH.

Fishing in Montana is a new experience for me. I really was excited to spend time on FLATHEAD lake. Little did I know that the lake is not often frozen for very long. Fortunately a cold snap allowed me to get out onto the lake even in MARCH this year. We had a solid 5 to 6 inches of ice and no problem walking around safely on the ice. We had a huge area t experiment with and search for fish.

I learned quickly that the fish were not really relating to any structure and the water was not all that deep. Most fish were right around 20 feet deep. Just had to move around and bit and find some fish cruising along the bottom.

Both lake whitefish and lake trout were cruising around and interested in biting.

Even though they seem to be targeting the smaller stuff in shallow they do like to chase the bigger tube jigs out in the deeper water. The https://www.certifiedlucky.com/ Tube Jigs that we were using were working very well. I highly recommend a stinger on the jigs when fishing trout. They love to short strike.
