Roy Woods - I Just Wanna Love (Live Performance)

It's one thing to sing a song and ride a groove. It's another to set a mood and create a bespoke world. Take a ride through 'Mixed Emotions' and you'll find that Roy Woods lives in the latter category. There's some dreamy, something far-off to the Canadian R&B vocalist's latest work. To be fair, inklings of this ethereal soul sound have been there for awhile. Drake knew it early on, that's why he signed Woods, Ontario native and new dad, to his OVO imprint in 2015. Woods has been refining his sound ever since, and the new 'Mixed Emotions,' his third album (he's made two EPs and numerous singles), is proof he's found something unique. It's his first full album in six years. In recent interviews, he's said his wild days are behind him, and that the 'Mixed Emotions' songs are more self-reflective. This time 'round it's all about "showing a lot of controlled creativity from where I want to give my feelings, give my places of thoughts, opinions on myself, relationships, other people in my family, the past, the future, everything." We had him into the studio for spins on "Test What I Know" and "I Just Wanna Love," and in the process, he took us far away.
