Harry Deitz has been a newspaper photographer, reporter, and editor in the Shamokin area for more than 70 years and during that time has covered most of the major news stories in the region. From the St. Edward’s Church fire, to the murder of three girls whose remains were found in a stripping pit, to the Walnut Towers fire that claimed the lives of nine people, to the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Agnes, Harry has been on the front line of the biggest stories in the community’s history.

He learned his photography skills in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and through the years became a trusted journalist who was respected by the police, coroner, and fire-fighters in addition to the readers of Shamokin newspapers.

In this interview, he talks about some of the important stories he reported and photographed.
