On May 13, 2022, four days after the 2022 Philippine presidential elections, several human rights and workers’ rights groups launched their “Black Friday protest” to condemn the alleged irregularities in the national and local elections and the Bongbong Marcos - Sara Duterte tandem in general.

The protest was originally supposed to take place in front of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) where the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) was located.

However, around 1,500 police officers barricaded the way to PICC, preventing protestors from reaching their destination. This forced the groups to stage their demonstrations near the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex instead.
