Sandhyavandanam is like a capsule packed with many esoteric practices of Hinduism. Some of them include shuddhi, pranayama, Sankalpa, Tarpana, Nyasa, Mantra japa, saying prayers to the five elements, to the dig devathas, rishis, ancestral deities of the manes and Gayathri/Savithri.

Describing the benefits of each one of the above is itself a humongous task. So I will try to keep it short and mention few spiritual benefits bestowed upon one who regularly performs the Sandhyavandanam. Pranayama regulates the life force in the body. According to yoga, the life force (prana - which is not breath but closely linked to breath) , the mind (manas) and the semen emerge from one single source in the subtle body. If one among the three is regulated, the other two get regulated automatically. For example: You control the prana with the breath, the mind also gets controlled. Pranayama also does nadi shuddhi i.e cleansing of the 72000 nadis in the human body.

The gayatri japa has its own benefits. Each letter in it when uttered generates a frequency that activates 24 important grandhis. A grandhi is a knot among the nadis in the subtle body and each of it is associated with a Shakti. For example: The Ooshma grandhi is located near the right hand's wrist region and the Shakti that resides in that Grandhi is called Saahasa (valor). Each letter of the formula invokes a power which may otherwise be sleeping or dormant in the individual. Likewise there are many other benefits bestowed upon the one who regularly practices it after being initiated with a brahmopadesa.

The entire Hindu philosophy is based on Karma siddhanta that emphasizes on the fact that one's own karma is the reason behind one's existence and experiences. That said, karma is again classified into Sanchita, Praarabdha and Agaami. Praarabhda karma is like the crop that is ready to yield fruit. It is very difficult to alter praarabhda. Unlike praarabhda, Sanchita is the karma that is still in the seed form. Sanchita karma can be altered by praayaschittha. Many puranas, like Garuda purana, prescribe the Gayatri japa as praayaschitta. This means an earnest Sadhaka who performs regular Gayatri and Sandhyavandanam will burn away the fruits of the actions done in the day even before the seeds of karma begin to yield crop.

Sandhyavandanam also increases the medhas thus enhancing one's receptivity to wisdom and knowledge. A simple example - Three persons may read the same book, one person may not understand anything, one person may understand what is in the book and the third may understand more than what is in the book. Regularly performing the Sandhyavandanam makes the mind sharper and subtler, and also bestows a healthy and long life.
