Here is how I paint dark skin--and Lupita Nyong'o is a beautiful subject! Dark skin takes time and multiple layers to achieve, but the value range from white to almost black is wonderful to work with. I admire Lupita so much, and I love this quote from her, "No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid."

Production note: my camera's focus freaks out from time to time in this video, and it has something to do with its many settings. If this bothers you, I'm very sorry, and I hope to have this bug fixed in my next video! Please fast-forward to the last minute of the video--cool things happen there.

Painting details:
"Lupita" is a 12"x9" watercolor on The Langton 140 lb watercolor paper. The video was sped up 9 times.

Colors used: cadmium red light, yellow ochre, dioxazine mauve, burnt sienna, sepia, cerulean, and thalo blue (all by Old Holland). Masking fluid: Incredible White Mask by Grafix.

Brushes: Sax 3/4" flat, American Painter #1 and #6 rounds, Windsor and Newton Cotman 000 round, Royal SG4000 #6 round (destroyed).

Nail polish: Wet 'N' Wild in Wet Cement :)
