The 2023 Piano Technicians'Guild annual convention took place in Washington DC, and a team of Smithsonian antique instrument experts taught a class about historic keyboard instrument preservation at the Museum of American History.

This replica of the 1722 Cristofori was completed recently after the creators spent weeks measuring and exploring the original in Rome. They used X-rays, lasers, and tiny cameras to look at parts of the piano not seen since it was built, then made this replica.

They chose to replicate the 1722 because it's the most original of the 3 remaining options. The oldest, which resides at the Met in New York, was converted to a harpsichord at some point in its life, but the 1723 appears to have spent its entire life as a piano.

This is the kind of piano that a young Wolfgang Mozart would have played in his youth.
