This week on The Horti-Culturalists grab a cup of tea and join us for an EPIC deep dive into the art of the hedge! We were very lucky to visit an extraordinary garden to look at some very special hedges and consider four types of hedge: sculptural cloud hedge, colour mix tapestry hedge, a hedge used to create a garden pavilion and finally alternatives to the classic box hedge. Stephen reveals some great tips about working with hedges in the garden: why small leafed plants are best, when to trim, how dense to plant, how to grow a border next to a hedge and the difference between using seedling grown plants or clones.
This is Stephen's list of alternatives to common hedge plants:
Westringia - native rosemary
Correa
Euonymus
Ilex crenata - Japanese holly
Elaeagnus submacrophylla - Russian olive
Ugni molinae - Chilean guava
Feijoa
Rhaphiolepis - Indian Hawthorn
