Many sewing threads will dry out. This can lead to breaking, fraying, and leaving lots of fuzz/lint behind. Commercial nylon and Dacron threads usually will not need rejuvenating, as well as, household sewing threads like monofilament and sliver. Commercial nylon threads can loose up to 60% of their strength after 90 days in the sun, and commercial polyester threads can loose between 15%-25% of their strength in the same amount of time. The moral of the story... Don't store your threads in the sun.

Using this method of thread rejuvenation, I have never had any mold or mildew form on the sponge, or the threads. Be sure to squeeze your sponge well so that it is not wet, you only want it dampened. If you notice any moisture on the inside of the wall of your thread container, leave it open and remove the sponge.
