Napier Silage | How to make Napier Grass Silage | GOAT FARMING PHILIPPINES

NAPIER SILAGE / CORN SILAGE (Burong Napier/Mais)

ADVANTAGES:
1. Napier/Corn silage can be stored for 2-10 years if properly done.
2. Used as feed when grass is scarce (El Niño) or during rainy season.
3. Appetizer (Pampagana kumain).
4. Provides crude protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
5. Improves milk production.
6. Good for healthy rumen function due to Lactobacillus.

INGREDIENTS:

1. Chopped Corn/ Napier (1-2inches length)
2. Molasses (2-4 glasses per 100kg of Chopped Napier/corn), (OPTIONAL)

TOOLS NEEDED:

1. Drum with lid.
2. Packaging tape for sealing
3. Pentel Pen for labeling

PROCEDURE:

1. Harvest corn stalks at 45-60days old. Harvest corn when it is not raining, or let the stalks dry for 1 day when it is raining.
For Napier, a 1.5m-1.8m height is the ideal plant height for good moisture content, Crude Protein and water-soluble carbohydrates which aids in good fermentation.
2. Chop stalks at 1-2 inches long . Do not include roots and soiled stem as they will spoil the silage.
3. Put the chopped stalks and compact (o tapakan) until 1/4 of the drum. Add 1 glass molasses.
4. Add chopped stalks and compact (o tapakan) until 1/2 of the drum. Add 1 glass molasses.
5. Add chopped stalks and compact (o tapakan) until 3/4 of the drum. Add 1 glass molasses.
6. Add chopped stalks and compact (o tapakan) until full. Add 1 glass molasses.
7. Add more chopped stalks above full level so that the lid can be closed tightly.
8. Close the lid and seal securely with packaging tape so that no air can enter the drum.
9. Put a label indicating the date it is made.
10. Store indoors with no direct sunlight.
11. Silage can be used after 21-30 days of fermentation.

CAUTION : DO NOT FEED TO YOUR GOATS IF THE SILAGE HAS MOLDS !!!
