In the chilling winds of the Himalayas, a battle unfolded that etched itself into the accounts of military history. The Battle of Rezang la by Kulpreet Yadav is a book that explores the heroic stand by Indian soldiers against a formidable Chinese force during the 1962 Sino-Indian War.

Rezang la located in northern India, is a remote pass in the Chushul Valley of Ladakh. It was here amidst the treacherous terrain and freezing temperatures, that one of the most intense and courageous battles took place.

Fought from October 20th to November 21st, 1962, the war was a result of a long-lasting border dispute between India and China. The dispute dates back to the 1914 Simla Accord, which set the McMahon Line between India and Tibet, however, China refused to recognise it. By 1950, both nations claimed the region with India viewing it as a part of Ladakh Region and China illegally building a road over it. India’s Forward Policy aimed to assert presence, however, the refusal of China to step back escalated tension. But the battle became a symbol of unmatched bravery. The Indian army led by Major Shaitan Singh, was tasked with holding a strategic position against the overwhelming odds.

At the dawn of November 18th, 1962, around 120 soldiers from the 13th Kumaon Regiment, commander Shaitan Singh, despite being heavily outnumbered and in brutal conditions: freezing temperatures, high altitudes and shortage of supplies they were determined to hold their ground. Major Singh and his men fought valiantly, repelling multiple Chinese assaults, by the end the Indian soldiers inflicted serious casualties on the enemy, but at great cost.

Of the 120 men who fought at Rezang la, only 6 survived. Their sacrifice was not in vain, it prevented the illegal occupation of the Leh region by China and played a crucial role in halting the Chinese advance and shifting the momentum of the war.

Rezang la stands as a testament to the heroism and sacrifice of those who fought. Major Shaitan Singh and his comrades' bravery is remembered with deep respect and admiration. The Battle reminded us of their incredible resolve, and their legacy continuing to inspire and honour the spirit of bravery and sacrifice.
