Why you should never purchase daily insurance for car rental from a third-party. While ago my family night we are going to a beautiful Hawaiian vacation. My wife booked The flights the hotels and I took care of the car rental. Since we did everything through bookings.com we choose a car also through them. We paid for the seven days of rental, and then we bought the full insurance for the whole period that we will use the car.
What we didn’t know is that by purchasing the daily insurance through bookings.com, it didn’t cover us what a regular car rental insurance would. Booking through a third-party, it’s never a good idea especially when we book hotels, flights, and especially cars, and rental car insurance.
Let me explain what happened.
I purchased through  bookings.com the insurance for the rental car, or at least it’s that what I thought I did. In reality, by purchasing to a third-party you put yourself in a position that, in many occasions, you go there and you don’t have a car rental, your hotel does not have the room for you, and you may not even be able to board your plane.
So please, make yourself a service and call directly those hotels, car rentals company, and airfare companies, instead of dealing with the middleman. This time, we were lucky enough to have a plane ride, a room, but with the car rental it’s been a very hard ride. Why? … you may ask. After we booked the car rental, and we pay for full insurance on the car, we received an email saying that we are fully covered and we should be worry free. It how the booking.com scammed us. We were actually buying a voucher for insurance instead of the insurance itself. When we picked up the car, we showed them that voucher and the Hertz company excepted it. The rental company, which was hurt, should’ve warned us that that’s not a real insurance. Not knowing the reality, we traveled worry free, and when another car hit our door in a parking lot and left without giving us any information we were put in a situation of having to deal with the whole damage our self and then waiting for bookings.com to possibly reimburse us. This is the biggest scam we’ve ever encountered on this line of services. booking.com assured us in an official email that everything is under control and covered. But after that, expected us to pay for the damage we weren’t even guilty of in dealing with stress problems and unwanted phone calls in pain. They put us through a lot of hoops, like they needed extra pictures, complete police report, an a series of documents, that were very difficult to obtain after 30 days from the date of the incident! I know it sounds unreal: paying for a service and finding out that was nothing, and you have to pay out of your pocket! And bookings.com was impossible to get a hold of, since they don't have any phone number, all it needs to be done via email, and their main office in not in United States. Incredible painful experience, and we still going back and forward after 4 months.
My advice, my friends, is always deal directly with the company that offers the services you need and never go through the middleman. This way you know exactly what to expect, and if anything goes wrong, you will be able to settle it with the party involved.
