The ongoing crisis is not just a humanitarian disaster but a microcosm of broader global environmental and social injustices. The illegal use of white phosphorus by the Israeli military is typical of a colonialist strategy that prioritises domination and destruction over life and harmony. The environmental devastation caused by these attacks extends far beyond immediate physical destruction, with long-term consequences on the health and well-being of the population, particularly in terms of reproductive health. This has broader implications for global agriculture and climate change, making it a crisis of international concern.

The Global Impact of White Phosphorus and Military Toxins:

White phosphorus, a chemical weapon known for its severe burning properties, has been deployed in Gaza, leading to horrific injuries and deaths. However, the impact extends beyond human casualties. The use of various other toxins in warfare poisons the soil, air, and water, contributing to the degradation of Gaza’s agricultural capacity. This environmental destruction directly affects the food security of Gazans, but the repercussions are global. As these toxins enter the food chain and environmental systems, they contribute to the larger crisis of global warming, further destabilising global agriculture.

The link between military violence and environmental degradation is not a new phenomenon. Corporations aligned with unfettered capitalism, driven by profit rather than sustainability, have long exploited land and resources without regard for the environmental and social costs. This destructive behaviour is a direct consequence of colonialist values that prioritise power and control over stewardship of the earth.

Gaza - A Microcosm of the Global Reproductive Health Crisis:

The environmental and military violence inflicted on Gaza has had devastating effects on reproductive health. As highlighted in a Radio 786 interview with researcher Vanessa Farr. The Zionist regime’s tactics are not just about immediate population control but also about long-term demographic changes. The toxins and malnutrition resulting from the ongoing blockade and military actions lead to significant reproductive health issues, particularly affecting women and children.

However, this is not just a Palestinian issue. The environmental poisons unleashed in Gaza are part of a broader pattern of global environmental degradation that affects reproductive health worldwide. The increase in conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other health issues can be linked to the environmental destruction caused by corporate interests aligned with military powers. These issues are particularly pronounced in marginalised communities, where access to healthcare and a clean environment is limited.

The Legacy of Colonialism and Eugenics:

The actions of the Israeli state in Gaza are part of a longer history of colonialism and eugenics that seeks to control and dominate indigenous populations. Colonial powers have historically justified their actions by dehumanising indigenous people, framing them as obstacles to progress. This mentality persists today in the form of environmental destruction and population control measures aimed at non-Western populations.

In contrast, various indigenous people around the world have traditionally lived in harmony with the land, understanding the importance of sustainability and balance. The current global environmental crisis is a direct result of abandoning these values in favour of exploitative capitalist practices.

Returning to the Islamic Fitrah:

In Islam, the concept of ‘fitrah’ refers to the natural state of being, one that is in harmony with Allah's Creation. As Muslims, it is our duty to return to this state, recognising that the earth is a trust from Allah SWT and that we are its stewards. The environmental and social crises we face today are a result of turning away from this fitrah, embracing instead the values of exploitation and domination.

To combat these injustices, we must first acknowledge the ways in which we are being poisoned—both literally and figuratively—by those who seek to profit from the destruction of the earth and its people. The ongoing genocide in Gaza, environmental destruction, and the global reproductive health crisis are all interconnected issues that stem from a common root: the abandonment of our responsibility as caretakers of the earth.
