BITOI, standing for Bass Is The Original Instrument, is Swedish-Ethiopian composer and bass player Cassius Lambert’s newest and most comprehensive work thus far. For it, Lambert plays the bass and electronics, and a choir consisting of Alexandra Shabo, Lise Kroner, and Anja Tietze Lahrmann accompanies him. BITOI relies on tradition, but, at the same time, it examines the outskirts of the musician’s capabilities. ‘Voice is an instrument that has always been with us (...). The electric bass, however, is a very young instrument (...)’, reasons Lambert. By combining these two entities into BITOI, he seeks to achieve vulnerability and strength.
