Stranded on a desert planet, intergalactic criminal- Brak, and his surviving crew are desperately trying to evade capture from a deadly bounty hunter known only as the Space Ghost. Have these interstellar felons truly evaded their masked captor, or is the Space Ghost closer than they realize?

A WORD FROM CHRIS

I pretty much made this short just to prove to myself that I could. I've been suggested tackling Space Ghost a few times over the years, and I felt that it was finally time to try my hand at the character. As of this post, there has yet to be a single live action adaptation of Space Ghost, which is surprising given he's been around since the 1960's. I knew if I was going to be the first filmmaker to do so, it needed to be taken seriously. I wanted to avoid the camp of the original cartoon and the oddball humor of Coast to Coast. This version of Space Ghost was going to be a mixture of The Punisher, Dirty Harry, Robocop, and (if you include the graphic novel version) The Count of Monte' Cristo. And I think that was the right choice. For some reason, many people seem to equate Space Ghost with Batman, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Space Ghost (at least my version) is a hard ass, take no prisoners if he doesn't have to, bounty hunter. He's single minded and laser focused.

I wanted the story to be part space western and part horror. I figure for a guy who refers to himself as a ghost, he should want people to be terrified of him. And having Space Ghost be ruthless and unforgiving would definitely help drive that theme home. Basically, if Space Ghost is hunting you, you're better off dead.

For the costume, I wanted to stay as close to the original cartoon design as humanly possible, because it's actually really damn good! It's not dated at all. So if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The only modifications I made were in the textures and colors for the materials. I used a blood red velvet for the arm bands and belt. For the cape, a gold foil fabric so light weight, that it flutters and billows at the tiniest of breezes, which looks damn cool! For the cowl, a shiny black spandex, to give some dimension. For the eyes and mask shape, a chrome painted face shield, similar to Cobra Commander's face mask. They sell them at Halloween stores and online if you're interested. And finally, for the body suit, a basic white morphsuit. I had originally planned to use a silver more reflective suit, but the material was literally too noisy for Tom Proprofsky to wear, and didn't fit him the way I wanted it too. Plus the white suit breathed better.

For Brak, I realized trying to make him look like his cartoon counterpart would be a terrible choice. Brak is incredibly goofy looking and there was no room for goof in this short. So instead, I took inspiration from Wolverine and Sabertooth and tried to make Brak more feral, complete with a fur collared cape, beard, and battle damaged helmet. I chose to keep Brak shadowed as much as possible. Unlike my Space Ghost costume, I was not as confident in the quality of my Brak costume.... mostly because it was more makeshift than anything. But I think that worked better for the character. Brak is not in a good place mentally, and lamenting in a literal darkened cave definitely gets that point across.

Filming took place at Bronson Cave, in Hollywood, which has sort of become a Blinky staple, as I've used it in many of my films. It's an amazing location and so easy to access, but of course, every easily accessible location means plenty of hikers, visitors and tourists. I usually don't mind, most people who happen upon my shoots tend to just hang out and peacefully watch, but every now and then you get those groups of people that could care less and either talk so loud that they ruin takes, or straight up traipse right through my shot, with no regard for my actors LITERALLY acting right in front of them. Thankfully, we shot on a weekday in late November, so the amount of unwanted traffic was lower than usual.
