Located in Karnataka, Hampi is a world heritage UNESCO site. It was the last capital of Vijayanagar, one of the greatest Hindu kingdoms in India’s history. Folklore also associates Hampi with the Hindu epic Ramayana. Conquered by the Deccan Muslim confederacy in 1565, the city was pillaged for six months before it was abandoned. But some of the grandeur of the place is still visible in the ruins of the city.
