Exposure therapy doesn't work because your driving anxiety is only a symptom of another problem. By working on symptoms or triggers, you're completely missing the true root cause of the problem. I have worked with hundreds of people who have forced themselves to face their fear only for the problem to move elsewhere. How do we know that exposure therapy moves the problem elsewhere? Because the transfer is often instant and becomes obvious. I've worked with people who forced themselves to drive, did so successfully but then had crippling fear when walking down the street when they've never had that before.

This is known as symptom substitution: when a problem swaps from one thing to another to keep itself "alive". It's not really alive, it's just that it has a message for you and it'll take different forms until you listen to it.

Fixing anxiety is NOT about conquering it, fighting it or exposing yourself to it. It's about listening to it and understanding it.
