Every year around this time, the Cavalla River, which forms the boundary between Liberia and Ivory Coast, overflows it’s banks.
At the Liberian town of Pedeboe, just outside Harper City in Maryland County, the river is at it’s widest – stretching up to 400 meters across at this time of year when tributaries from both Liberia and Ivory Coast fill in. Another factor responsible for the rise in water level at this time is the tidal nature of the river. Crossing over then becomes difficult and trucks carrying essential goods are stalled on both sides – sometimes for weeks.
But that might just be a thing of the past over the next 24 months. Engineers from a Chinese firm are now in Maryland County, Liberia, to commence the construction of a bridge. The project is expected to last for 24 months
and is part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) technical infrastructure sharing endeavor.
Liberia and other West African countries also enjoy such sharing in the area of electricity from the West Africa Power Pool Project.
People who spoke to me are all excited as the construction of the bridge will definitely ease the challenges trades and others have to face, even during the dry season, when the river and tides are at their lowest.
