Thiruvathira or Thiruvathirai or Arudhra Darisanam is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Thiruvathirai (Arudhra) in Tamil means "sacred big wave". In Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, the Sri Natarajar temple's annual Festival is celebrated on this date. In the month of Makaram Thiruvathira Star is celebrated in Mathira Peedika Devi Temple, owned by Thiruvithamcore Devaswom Board, near Kadakkal in Kollam District of Kerala state. Thiruvathira has a connection with the lord moon.

Thiruvathira Dance, Traditional Art Form of Kerala. Thiruvathirakali or Kaikottikali is one of the most primal dance forms of Kerala, as it is performed in a circle with a lit lamp placed in the middle.Thiruvathirakali is an annual synchronized group dance performed by women in Kerala, invoking the favor of Lord Shiva. God's Own Country is resplendent with visuals of dancers in traditional attire, seamlessly clapping and joining hands around a traditional wick lamp (Nilavilakku). The alternate name of Kaikottikali refers to this clapping, which is now globally synonymous with the art form. The circular motion resembles a gentle wave, perpetually moving around the lamp. This art form is performed to seek peace and tranquility in one's marital life and is a fixture in different parts of South India. The lasya or tender movements of the devotee signifies their deep reverence for the Almighty.
