Sinus lift or maxillary sinus augmentation is an oral surgery procedure where a bone graft is placed in the maxillary sinus to allow implant placement.

3D video of Clínica Médico Dental Pardiñas (http://j.mp/cPardinas) about how the sinus lift procedure is performed to place dental implants later.

Maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities that are inside the face. Over the time, they may start to expand due to various causes. One is the lack of teeth that delimitates it. If the sinus is so widespread that there is no sufficient bone height available, it will not be possible to place implants there without grafting previously.

This type of graft is known as sinus lift. It consists of getting an access to the sinus, then the sinus membrane is lifted and filled with bone graft material, which could be artificial, coming from animals or from the same person. Finally, a membrane is placed in the access area, which will gradually be reabsorbed. After the intervention, the graft is left to heal for 6-9 months before placing implants. In certain cases, it is possible to place the implants simultaneously in the same surgery.
