Here are what I find are the two best fixatives for oil pastels, and at the end I'll share an unbeatable combo that prevents smudging.

I love oil pastels, but they are a pain to use in sketchbooks. I have been playing around with varnishing formulas for a while and in doing so stumbled across this combination of top fixatives that together in a certain order, harden the surface of the oil pastel piece. It's enough to allow sketching with oil pastels, which they excel at. I still put a tracing paper or deli paper page between because shiny surface stick to one another, but the smudging is taken care of.
