Mary Cassatt, born in Pennsylvania and trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), challenged traditional expectations and travelled to Europe to find her independence as a professional artist. She became a celebrated member of the French Impressionists and is known for her perceptive depictions of women and children. The exhibit, Mary Cassatt at Work, examines her engagement with the realities of gender and labor in her portrayal of other traditionally feminine activities.

Join us for our inaugural program in the Putman Arts Leader Lecture Series as we welcome Jennifer Thompson, The Gloria and Jack Drosdick Curator of European Painting & Sculpture and Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection, and her presentation Practicing her Profession: Mary Cassatt at Work. She curated Mary Cassatt at Work, the first large-scale exhibition devoted to the artist in thirty years, which will open at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in May 2024.

Support for this program was provided by the Mary Louise Putman Endowment.
