In this episode I share the pure joy of learning and playing the Led Zeppelin song “Ramble On”. This is such an incredible track compositionally and a delight to play on guitar. Released by the band in 1969, the track is an early demonstration of the use of light and heavy textures within the same song. That dichotomy became one of the signature traits of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin throughout their career.

Disclosure: That is me actually playing the chorus riff live against a YouTube drum/bass backing track at the introduction to this episode. I did NOT use a Led Zeppelin recording. I’m using a Bogner ‘La Grange’ distortion pedal into my Fender Deluxe Reverb amp (which has been modified).

In this video (1) I discuss and demonstrate the fluid nature of strumming. (2) The difference between power vs. force in ones playing and set-up. (3) The variations of the verse throughout the piece, (4) the downward voice leading in the chorus riff, and (5) the prosody of the lyrics and music. Ramble On is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin tracks of all time and I can’t hide my joy of learning how to play the parts of this song on the guitar.

Stemming from my 40+ years as a professional artist, I bring a historical and a composer’s background to my love of rock music by analyzing and playing some of the most iconic music of all time. At the heart of all my videos is that I’m an enthusiast who has dedicated his entire life to composing and playing music.

Whether you’re a guitar player, musician, songwriter or just a music enthusiast, I’m sure you will find something in these videos to inspire you and help you smile.
