My brother was diagnosed with bone cancer back in February. His official diagnosis is Osteosarcoma of the spine, it is extremely rare. A couple of day's ago he had his appointment with MD Anderson. The surgeon said surgery was possible, however due to where his cancer is there would be several complications. These complications would not be a maybe they would happen. His cancer has engulfed several nerves, in order for the surgery to give him his best chance they would have to remove the tumor, bone, nerves as a whole. It would spread if they try to cut out small pieces. He would have no bladder, nor bowel function. Daily catheters and an ostomy bag for the rest of his life. He would also lose feeling in his right foot from the ankle down, he'd have to wear a brace forever due to that. He would be able to walk again but after a year of therapy. He would also lose feeling in his lower region. So having children naturally would be out of the question. If he has the surgery ,he would be in ICU for at least six weeks and a possible 4 month stay due to skin grafts and infections and minor surgeries he might need after. An MRI was done for this surgeon and his cancer has spread some. The doctor made it clear that this surgery is the only way to cure him, for him to survive. He is still in fighting mode, he will do chemo, radiation whatever the doctor tells him. I can't imagine being told all of this at just 19 years old. I still have faith my brother will get his miracle.
