Palm oil seed germination is really different as compared to other types of seeds germination. The first step of oil palm hybrid seed production is bagging. Bagging is the process of covering the inflorescence in the palm to avoid unwanted pollination. When the flowers open, it is then pollinated with high quality pollen grains (which are collected and stored prior to bagging of female inflorescence) to get healthy and quality seeds. Next step is harvesting the bunches from the palm. After harvesting , the spikelets are separated from the stalk and some water is sprinkled over the spikelets for 3 days to separate the fruits easily. The seeds are removed from the fruits using depericarper by removing the fleshy part of the fruit. After separating the seeds they are treated with fungal solution.
The next step is applying temperature to the seed for breaking the dormancy for early germination. By applying 40 degree celsius constantly for 60 days the dormancy is brocken which helps in quick germination. After applying temperature the seeds are soaked in water to increase the moisture content before keeping the seeds for germination. The germinated seeds are handpicked and packed for sale.
