The historic highway (NH55) is the main ariel road of Darjeeling Hills and is the legacy of the British Empire. The Britishers commenced construction of the old hill cart road in 1860 by cutting through the thick jungles that overran the hills. It was finally completed in 1869 when Siliguri in the Terai and Darjeeling in the hIlls was subsequently connected. The most beautiful stretch of the more than century old NH55 is between Sukna to Kurseong and anyone who has experienced this amazing mountain road would vouch for it.
