Every morning, my living room tanks and my bedroom tanks and my office tank get hit with rays of sunlight. Now they say UV is a thing that you need. I don’t know if anyone really knows the answer to that. So far they say yes. Photosynthesis. Is the amount of it is how you get nicely colored tips. Are we harming the animal for better coloration?
I have a frag tank that doesn’t take any UV light from sun rays or high real UV light. Many reef tanks out their do well without uv light in general. Just the supplemental Kessil light over the frag tank and my other tanks as a source of sun; it does just fine. My reef tanks have Kessil and some Red Sea LED lights and the ray of light it produces is just fine with what is hitting them as it comes to par/micromoles levels. Is it fake UV light. I get the right amount of light going down all the way to the sand bed with the help of a par meter. I honestly in my case see no need for extra UV light in my opinion; however, I from what I see and hear out there there’s not really a definite answer if it actually truly is needed. I get great coloration from just the lighting I have over my tanks now, and growth and the fish do just fine as well. That is why corals never really stay the same exact color because of all the difference in lighting out there. The technology is advancing and that means more spending for us as reefing hobbyist. Yay for more increase of spending. Not really or please no more increases in good LED lighting... It is damn expensive...

So just remember that you are going to see a lot of these Youtubers talking about all these new lights and this new tech coming out for lighting supplementation for your reef tanks. Just know that if your tanks are doing just fine and your lighting has no reason to be changed out. Then just keep running the same light until you truly need something new over your tank. A lot of these Youtubers are commercializing products due to their sponsors Not making them but them helping them feed off your addiction. Please stop feeding them more of your unneeded spending. Keep this hobby affordable for yourself in the here and now, and in the long run. Myself as a reefing hobbyist know that stability is all that matters. Your corals will thrive. If your parameters are set in a range that will keep them happy. Just remember as I always hear from time to time we are the water keepers that keep our animals alive and happy.
