In this episode of the viola da gamba making process I’m starting the most complex part of the instrument which is the bent top. It is made of five staves that are steam bent, cut into shape and glued together. Viol soundboards made this way are stronger thanks to less wood fibers being cut. It also allows them to be thinner and lighter.
