Create your own “Flip the Fish” with me in this full step-by-step tutorial! This NO-SEW fish takes only 35 minutes to make and here’s the fun part: Flip the fish is his name and it’s also a game! Due to the flat ridge on the front of the fish’s body, it tends to land flat on its mouth when flipped. Like water-bottle flipping but quieter and a bit more silly thanks to this funny fish. :)

The materials you will need to make this fish are:
    • 5mm crochet hook
    • #6 super bulky weight yarn*: peach (for the mouth), green (for the body), and tan (for the tail)
    • Yarn needle (just for weaving in ends)
    • 18 mm black safety eyes
    • polyester fiber fill stuffing

*For this video, I used Parfait Chunky yarn from Premier Yarns in colors “Light Peach,” “Key Lime,” and “Mushroom” (affiliate link): https://premier-yarns.pxf.io/e4OvDz

The following stitches are used to make this fish: chain, single crochet, single crochet decrease stitch, slip stitch, double crochet, and half double crochet

Stitch abbreviations:
ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
BLO – back loops only
sl st – slip stitch
dec – sc decrease st
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet

Want to make this fish with a different yarn weight? I’ve found that the fish made in #6 super bulky weight yarn successfully flip most often, but you can also make this fish with #4 medium worsted weight yarn or #7 jumbo weight yarn and they will flip as well! Just follow this tutorial as shown with the yarn weight of your choice!

A flip fish made from this video tutorial with #6 super bulky weight yarn will be 5.5 inches (14 cm) tall; with #4 medium worsted weight yarn, it will be 4 inches (10 cm) tall, and with #7 jumbo weight yarn, it will be 9 inches (23 cm) tall.

Note: To tack the mouth in place to secure the mouth indent, see this short video here:    • Flip the Fish #Crochet Tip | Free You...   - Cut a strand in the color of the tail fin. Weave it through the fish from the beginning round of the mouth to the tail fin in a U shape. Tie the 2 ends in a knot and weave the ends inside the body.
