Today is National Bilby Day a day to recognise the vitally important Australian species, the Great Bilby. Commonly known as 'ecological engineers’ of the Australian bush due to the amount of soil they turnover, this little marsupial was commonly found in deserts of NSW, but due to predation by introduced species, they have been extinct in the wild for more than 100 years.

October last year marked an iconic moment in Taronga's history, where Zookeepers from Taronga Western Plains Zoo released several Greater Bilbies into the Taronga Sanctuary, a 110-hectare predator-free breeding site at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, with the intent to save this species. Since then, the bilbies have been flourising multiple joeys born!

Join our host Hayden and Keeper Grace for a very special Taronga Tv episode as we learn more about this iconic species!
