Germany's early 20th century history is dominated by both the autocratic rule under the Kaiser and then the rise of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler in the late 20's and 30's, but what about that other radical ideology that burnt across Europe like a prairie fire in the opening decades of the 20th century? Communism played a large part in Germany's later history, and it may not come as a surprise to you that after the fall of the Kaiser in 1918 they were eager to claim Deutschland as their own, in an attempt to model their nation after the recently revolutionised Russia. In this video I'll be covering the Spartacist Uprising undertaken by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg in Berlin in the early days of 1919, why they did so, how the government responded, why they failed and finally how this influenced the future of both Germany and the world.
