Is 2025 The End of Steam Deck?

The Steam Deck has remained competitive with PS4 games like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War and Death Stranding

It’s hitting a wall with next gen games like Space Marine 2, Star Wars Outlaws and Final Fantasy XVI

I’m assuming that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also won’t fair well as it’s difficult to run on the base PS5 and requires a PS5 Pro to get a good image at 60fps

Valve is waiting for new chips to become available

The Z2 chip is poised to release next year

But Valve will want to make their own custom chip with AMD

They said when the OLED came out last year that the Steam Deck 2 is a “couple years out” which would put the hardware launch at around the end of 2025 or the early half of 2026

I think it’s critical that they get the 2025 launch moved up as a priority

They’re still behind on promised features like the full release of SteamOS 3.0 and they’re working to move it over to the ROG Ally and Ally X

Hopefully they have multiple teams working on hardware and software, but as they’ve said in other interviews, it’s not a massive team working on the Deck which is why updates have been so piecemeal

Still, while working on scaling up and optimizing SteamOS 3 during the first year and a half of the Steam Deck’s life, they released the OLED which is a full overhaul of the Steam Deck from top to bottom that boosted performance a bit

So I’m hopeful that they’re going to see more and more next-gen games coming to both PS5 and PC that can’t run on the Steam Deck and they’ll act accordingly
