Josef Otto af Sillén (1859−1951) was born in Solna on 2 July 1859 and died in Stockholm on 14 July 1951. After completing secondary school he began a career in the military with the Västgöta-Dals regiment. He later went on to a career in the insurance industry and from 1900 until 1928 he worked as the director for the Heimdall insurance company, which he also founded. During 1903−17 he was chair of the New Philharmonic Society in Stockholm. As a composer Sillén was particularly devoted to orchestral music and, among other things, he wrote several symphonies in a late Romantic style.
