Train crash kills 80 injures 127. A train caring primarily circus workers was struck by another train as the engineer was noted as suffering from extreme fatigue and possibly a cause of being medicated at the time of impact. Both trains were heading north on the same rail line and the accident happened at 4.00 in the A.M. as most of the passengers sleep.
On the 22nd of June, 1918, the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was on its way to its next scheduled performance in Hammond, Indiana.
The deceased are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park at a place designated as "Showmen's Rest".
