You may have heard the claim that Africa had no writing before colonialism.  Whether this claim is made by way of ignorance or  to deliberately misguide the public, the accusation is as damaging as it is demonstrably false.

In reality, Africa is the home of writing, and as such, home to several of the oldest and most influential written languages known to man.  Whether that be the insibidi script of west africa, the ge'ez script of East Africa, the ancient meroitic script of The Sudan, or the, now globally infamous, medu neter script (commonly known as hieroglyphs or hieratic) of Africa's Nile Valley; Africans have always prized the need to keep records and ledgers both orally, artistically and by means of the written word.
