Can a dad get 50/50 custody? The answer is yes. The mom and the dad have equal opportunities to get legal and physical custody. There are landmines along the way. There are certain things you can avoid to increase your chances of getting custody. The court looks at various factors when dealing with the best interest of your child. Do not allow yourself to be pulled into things. Things that are going to hold you in a bad light. One is domestic violence in the household. Be careful not to get lured into a situation where the cops show up at your house and arrest you for domestic violence. Given all things are equal and you get caught for domestic violence, the other parent gets custody. Make sure whatever happens things don’t escalate. The escalation is your biggest landmine. Two, don’t diminish the importance of the co-parent in front of your child. Don’t try to use your time with your child to badmouth your co-parent. There’s always the temptation to badmouth the other parent because of some hurt feelings. If the badmouthing reaches the court, you are the one being seen in a bad light. Avoid the drama. Whatever happens, do not escalate whatever drama that is already brewing. The drama is your landmine.
