For over two decades, the Tamil Tigers fought to establish a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka. The guerilla organisation made a name for itself with suicide bombings and assassinations of high-profile politicians.

For this 2002 documentary, Dateline’s Ginny Stein was granted a rare access to the Tiger-controlled territory at the time when the Sri Lankan government and the Tigers signed a ceasefire agreement, and the hopes for peace were high.

Seven years later, the military would defeat the militant group, bringing the 26-year civil war to an end.

This episode first aired in March 2002.
