South Asia's first 'Ro-Ro' ferry service begins in Gujarat

History was made on Thursday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first phase of the Rs 615 crore 'roll-on-roll-off' (ro-ro) ferry service between Ghogha in Saurashtra and Dahej in south Gujarat.

He himself undertook the journey, the first ever not only for the country but the entire South-Asia.

On January 25, 2012, then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a service which would prove revolutionary in the coming days. The service is now set to ride the waves of the Gulf of Cambay bridging two regions of the state.

The Ghogha-Dahej RoRo service set to transform the distance between two destinations. The service began on an auspicious note amidst the chanting of Mantras.

The RoRo service was a challenging project considering technical issues and policy confines. Policy paralysis on part of the Congress govt at the Centre led to delays in the execution of the project. There were impediments related to altering the port in accordance with the service and the Ghogha terminal but the efforts of the current Central govt helped surmount them.

The ferry service while riding the waves will shorten the 360 kms distance between Ghogha in Bhavnagar district to Dahej in Bharuch district to just 32 kms by water and the travel time will come down from 7 to 8 hours to just 1 hour. It will also boost tourism in Saurashtra.

On board the RoRo service with the PM, some very special guests, Divyang children. The voyage saw them interact freely with the PM. It was completed in the stipulated one hour but it clearly left a lifelong imprint on these young minds.

And this is just the beginning, the government plans to extend the RoRo service to other locations across the Gulf of Khambat and Gulf of Kutch. There are also ambitious plans to connect the state to Mumbai and other southern states by this link. Coastline development is a major focus for the govt to foster connectivity, commerce & create jobs. Similar projects have also been conceived in other parts of the country wherever feasible water will be turned into a bridge between two separate lands.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi after completing his RoRo Ferry ride reached Dahej, and there addressing a public meeting, he said that during this journey, he felt as if he is experiencing the dreams of 125 crore Indians. He termed this RoRo service as New India dream coming true. PM termed the RoRo service as historic. He said that this dream was visualised by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and B R Ambedkar, and this was fulfilled today.

The Prime Minister also dedicated Sarvottam cattle feed plant of Shree Bhavnagar District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd at Ghogha in Bhavnagar district.
