HIV / AIDS is still considered a global epidemic by the World Health Organisation. Around 60 per cent of new infections occur in sub-Saharan Africa. In the UK and US we view it as a distant crisis, but many members of the scientific and LGBT communities will never forget the horrific peak of the 1980s.
