Market Gardening in Southeast Alaska
Notes Week Ending July 20

Unable to harvest until Thursday because of heavy rain. Meanwhile, catch up on garden documentation and contact greenhouse company for NRCS tunnel required purchase by early September.

Sales Estimate:
On Wednesday, make a guess at the amount of NE1 sugar snap peas that I'll be able to harvest in order to open online store; sell peas in both 8 oz and 4 oz bag size, sandwich and snack bags; situate vines back on trellis after rain knocked some down, and note that NE2 second batch of peas are developing on vines, but not yet mature. Decide not to harvest basil because plants have not regrown a lot during dismal weather and limits the amount of last-minute harvesting required. On Saturday, test harvest NW4 carrots and determine that I could have harvested carrot this week to sell.

Lettuce Mix & Baby Greens:
On Thursday, harvest for a first cut the NE6A Salanova, which is the third succession of 20-ft lettuce patch out in the garden, and lightly harvest the green and a partial bed of the red because I haven't been selling a full patch, and less orders this week. Harvest NW1A Baby Chard (2) two rows east side and, for the first time, GH2 Orach (3) all bed ends. Calculate how much Salanova lettuce required for remainder of season and pull NE7B Red Salanova second growth remaining, NE6A Red & Green Salanova after only one harvest, and NE4B Salanova extra patch never cut in order to make room for third patch of green onions to be transplanted later. Note germination on July 18 of the NE7A Mizuna & Spinach and NW1B Baby Chard seeded last week.

Garlic Scape Final Harvest & Clearing Clover:
Recognize that NW 6 – 8 garlic scapes are getting too big and woody (NW5 scapes already all harvested); had hoped to sell them at next weekend community market, but it's too late, so cut all scapes (one tub per bed) and store in the fridge until I have time to chop and freeze for personal use. Remove clover growing in pathway after scraping off clover sprouts early in the spring in NE3 to make room for transplanting herbs; pull the clover from the loose ground and shovel soil back onto NE3 between herbs, and move all vegetation to unfenced NE Hugelkultur.
