In February 1945, a US Army Air Force B-24 Bomber was heading to Warrington when low cloud took them off course. Descending the clouds to gain a visual location, the pilot spotted a town below, presumed it was Liverpool, and turned east towards his destination. However, the pilot had spotted Burnley, and east headed to the moorland and behind the clouds was Black Hameldon Hill.

Nearly 80 years on, this aeroplane crash site has only the undercarriage of the plane remaining. 5 people passed away at the location, 3 more soon after from their injuries. Only the pilot survived.
