Anyone who knows the history of the Brazilian Championship is well aware that since its first edition, the method of dispute and the number of participants has been changed countless times, definitively adopting the running points system, starting in 2003. The Championship Brazilian has already been defined in triangular, quadrangular, in single finals, in round-trip games, and even in best of 3, and I particularly consider running points the best way to define your champion, after all, it rewards the club of better performance and regularity, throughout the championship.

It is often argued that running points have no emotion, and that in reality, mata mata was more attractive and had more unexpected results, and thinking about it in this video, we did a simulation of what it would be like if the Brazilian Championship was still played in the Mata method -Kills to the present day. In the past, before running points were adopted, all clubs faced each other in a single round, with the first 8 classified, advancing to the knockout, and the 4 worst classified, being relegated.

In order to simulate what it would be like if the knockout were still played from 2003, let's take some factors into account. The first 8 placed at the end of the first round would advance to the knockout, and taking into account how it used to be, the 1st placed faces in the quarterfinals, the 8th, the 2nd the 7th, the 3rd the 6th, and the 4th faces the 5th place. The last 4 at the end of the first phase would be relegated to the second division. The results used in each match were the finals in the first round duels, with the second round games in each edition being disregarded, with the exception of the title decision.

When the result is a tie, the phase advances, the best club placed among the 8. In the finals, if the global score ends on an equal footing, the best campaign will also be taken into account. Explained in the best possible way, and leaving no more doubts in understanding and interpretation, we are now going to meet the finalists and champions, as well as several surprise relegations in each edition, if the knockout had never stopped being disputed.
