When we discover the archipelago of Sao Tome and Principe, these islands “in the middle of the world”, delicately placed at the intersection of the Equator and the Greenwich meridian, we set foot in an earthly paradise. A place so discreet that tourism is almost confidential. The archipelago, the smallest state in Africa lying in the Gulf of Guinea, was also a Portuguese colony. The Portuguese left in 1975, leaving behind ghosts: colonial properties lost in the middle of the forest. We call them roças.
