The Nintendo DSi was a handheld gaming console released by Nintendo in 2009, serving as an upgrade to the popular Nintendo DS Lite. It introduced several new features while retaining the dual-screen design and touchscreen interface of its predecessor. One significant enhancement was the addition of two built-in cameras - one facing outward and one facing the user - allowing for photos to be taken and manipulated using built-in editing software. This feature opened up new gameplay possibilities and augmented reality experiences.

Another notable change with the DSi was the removal of the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot present in previous DS models. This decision was made to allow for a slimmer design and to focus on digital distribution of games via the newly introduced Nintendo DSi Shop. Players could download a variety of games and applications directly to the console, expanding its library beyond physical cartridges. This move towards digital distribution foreshadowed Nintendo's future strategies with platforms like the Nintendo eShop on later consoles.

The DSi also featured an improved user interface, including new menu options and the ability to customize the console's appearance with downloadable themes. Additionally, it introduced DSiWare, a collection of downloadable games and applications available for purchase in the DSi Shop. DSiWare titles ranged from bite-sized puzzle games to creative utilities, further diversifying the DSi's entertainment offerings.

Nintendo continued to support the DSi with firmware updates, adding new features and addressing security concerns. However, its successor, the Nintendo 3DS, was released in 2011, offering 3D visuals without the need for glasses and backward compatibility with DSi software. Despite being succeeded by the 3DS, the DSi left a lasting impact on the handheld gaming market, showcasing Nintendo's innovation in portable gaming technology and paving the way for future handheld consoles.
