The ultimate goal of science is of course to improve the world. That can't happen if all of our research stays private. As such, the most important step in the research process is reporting your results to others, and making it possible for all the other researchers out there to build on your work. This means writing it all down and making that paper available to others.

I'm sure you've all written papers before, and lots of different kinds of papers. Scientific writing is a much different thing than writing a novel or a newspaper article or poetry (all of which are incredibly important, they are just very different ways of writing). Scientific papers usually use the same rough outline, with an introduction to sate the research question and "set the scene," followed by a literature review to describe the current state of research in the area, then a methods section to describe the plan for the research, a results section to list the findings, a discussion section to put those research findings into context, and a conclusion to wrap it all up and give ideas for further research on the topic.
