“Architecture in many ways is the art of prepositions.” -Kjetil Trædal Thorsen

Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, founding partner and architect at Snøhetta, talks sound, space, and the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to architecture. Torsen notes that though architecture is usually described visually, that we should not ignore how our other senses interact with the built environment. For the design process, emphasizes the importance of “transpositioning” in an increasingly specialized world to ensure architecture remains collaborative and interdisciplinary. Thorsen prefers an office that is not limited to traditional architects, but one that also includes sociologists and sound engineers, among others.

Kjetil Trædal Thorsen is the co-founder of the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, where he has notably worked on the Lillehammer Art Museum, the Bibliotheca Library in Alexandria, Egypt, and the Oslo Opera House. Torsen, alongside Olafur Eliasson, designed the 2007 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion.

RESONATE: Thinking Sound & Space was a conference on architecture, art and sound powered by MAAT and reSITE. It took place on 12 February 2018 at MAAT Museum, Lisbon, Portugal in collaboration with Meyer Sound. Video co-produced by reSITE & Canal180

reSITE is an international platform connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. We work at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, politics, culture, and economics.

We feature thought leaders whose work pushes the boundaries on how we build, design, regenerate and create life in cities, and frame them through many lenses, convening them in one place. We act as a catalyst for social action and innovative leadership. We encourage an exchange of ideas about making cities more livable, competitive, and resilient. We protect and promote public space, architecture, and sustainable development in cities.

All to make our cities more livable, competitive, resilient, inclusive, mobile, and designed with humans in mind.
